On February 11 2012, nearly 450 people joined for a special concert by Sara Groves in support of the local ministry of Amazing Grace Adoptions and Orphan Care. Over $15,000 was raised for the organization --- all of which will be used to support its work in providing counseling and care to birth-mothers domestically and to orphans in southwest Uganda.
Given her support of such initiatives in neighboring Rwanda, Sara Groves was a fitting focus of the event. Well aware of the needs in third-world countries via her work with International Justice Mission and Food for the Hungry, she was a natural selection for the benefit. Accompanied by husband Troy on percussion and friend Aaron Fabbrino on bass and pedal steel, Groves took us through a set of songs off many of her albums, not just her latest release, making for a an experience unlike her recent tour set. With the addition of New York City singer-songwriter and special guest Jane Kelly Williams (an adoptive Mom), it was a night to remember.
The night was made even more memorable by the beauty and intimacy of the 600 seat Fletcher Opera Theater. A minimalist backdrop, colorful and varied lighting, and resonant sound only accentuated the music. Many sponsors were able to spend time with Sara and Jane at a special reception immediately after the event. Ugandan crafts were even on sale in the lobby!
You can still give to Amazing Grace. The plight of orphans in Uganda is great, as many now know because of the viral nature of the Kony 2012 video. And yet if you wish to give your money to a local ministry with international work, give to Amazing Grace. It's not too late. To give, click here and then click "donate."
And mark your calendars for the next Amazing Grace benefit concert on March 2, 2013 at Fletcher Opera Theater, artist to be announced.
